I have been going to Buckroe Beach since I was a child. First with our church group as it spent many happy times on the beach and the "carnival", then as an adult listening to the music at the park, and also as a grandmother playing with her grandson in the water and sand. There are so few waterfront areas left in Virginia that are not overcrowded, overbuilt, or private high-priced property -- why destroy one more spot. How do you explain to a child about God's beauty of the water and sand when it is covered by cement or kept to those who can afford to live on it or vacation on it?

We are surrounded by water on three sides, yet there are no open public areas for people to come and enjoy the water. Look at what is happening on Cheasepeake Ave. Private property owners don't want the public to sit and enjoy the view of Hampton Roads. Don't let that happen to Buckroe. The quality of life is not measured by tax dollar revenues.

As a former resident of the Tidewater area, and having grown up at Buckroe Beach, I still enjoy visiting the beach area when I come "home". The lack of commercial strips, cars, noise and an over- abundance of people is what makes the Buckroe area so much more appealing to me, my family and friends. Please leave well-enough alone and let us enjoy the beach as such and not as a mall. Thank you, Jane Penn Clark

Buckroe Beach is a lovely place to take your family for birthday parties, reunions or just a day at the beach with the kids. It is close, convenient and safe. Why would anyone consider giving it to just the few who have the $$$ to buy beach front condos? Is something going on under the table?

I lived in the Buckroe area for the first thirty years of my life. I enjoy visiting Buckroe Beach. It has always been a place where I could go and spend a few hours in the sun. It helps me relax, and remember the wonderful days I once spent there with my family as a child. The quiet sounds of the waves to me is the greatest thing. The Beach has always been a safe place to visit. It has changed a bit over the years. It would be a sad thing if it were covered over with Condos or closed to the public. Please lets preserve what is left and keep the beach open for the public to enjoy. Buckroe Beach has always been a gift to my life.

It highly disappoints me to know that the City Council wants to take every bit of the land down at Buckroe Beach for the purpose of building Condominiums. You folks just don't seem to realize that it is us, the taxpayers, that have to pay for these building structures, such as the Power Plant. Mr. Gear, a past council member was responsible for people having their homes taken away from them, did not even pay them the money that they owed these people to take their homes, and for what, a place that has turned into the biggest fiasco. We now have Lowes, now alot of restaurants are going up there, and there is alot of congestion in that area, getting in and out. We did not, and do not need all of these restaurants. Then we have Mamie Locke, who had to have the convention center go up saying that it would bring alot of conventioneers, well guess what folks, we don't need, nor want to have all of those conventioneers here. Mamie Locke did not care about the good of the public, or the city, the only thing she has ever been concerned with, along with Mr Gear, is money. Well what goes around, comes around. Now the City Council wants to destroy Downtown Hampton, and Buckroe Beach. Downtown Hampton is a quaint little place to go, when you want to get a bite to eat, visit a few shops that are there, and hear some live entertainment. Now that is all being destroyed, by the building of Condos, which we DO NOT NEED. It is the same thing you folks want to do to Buckroe Beach, why is it that you folks have to build up every bit of land that there is on the peninsula. Why is it that you are so unhappy with the way things are, this is NOT ATLANTA. This is Hampton, VA, we do not want things built up like a big city, we live in the suburbs and we are happy with that. Stop trying to take away everything, stop trying to crowd us with bringing more people in here, but more importantly, stop tearing up the grassy areas, and the trees for Condos, and housing. It seems to me that the City Council is too concerned with money instead of being concerned with the desires of the public.....

I applaud everyone for there concern and the efforts both for and against the Buckroe Master plan and the redevelopment efforts. It¿s good to see people getting involved!!! I would like to offer one correction to the statement made by the operator of this web site, In the speech presented to city council on 23 March, it was stated that ¿It was only at the final meeting that the citizens were told that in order to vote on the plan, they had to be members of the Buckroe Civic Association and that they must be members for 30 days in order to vote on any issue. The process of involving the citizens of Buckroe in the planning effort was ultimately misleading and unfair.¿ I as a member of the Buckroe Civic Association (BCA) and former board member and past president, I feel that this information is incorrect or misleading at best. At its normal monthly meetings, the BCA hosted speakers form city planning and Urban Design Associates on quite a few occasions over the last year to facilitate community involvement and input. The results of these public meetings are reflected in the Master plan. ¿Note the sections of the master plan that show the colored dots, there were put there by the citizens in attendance.¿ These community outreach meetings were open to the public and actively advertised in the BCA monthly news letter, as well as the news paper and local cable TV Hampton City channel. As a result of the final presentation on March 8, 2005, the BCA as a course of its normal business, received a motion from the floor from one of its members, I quote ¿--Members Name removed¿move that the BCA support the 2005 Buckroe Master Plan as presented at the BCA General Membership meeting, Tuesday, March 8, 2005¿ This motion was seconded and a vote was called for resulting in a 34 to 6 vote in favor of the plan. Motion carried The vote represented the BCA membership in attendance. As in all past BCA meetings where public speakers were invited and normal BCA business was conducted, guests and visitors are not allowed to vote on BCA business. The vote was that the "BCA" support the plan,it did not attempt to state that represented all of Buckroe or all of those that were in attendance. It is also stated in the published By-Laws of the BCA that a new member receives voting rights 30 days after becoming a member. This is to promote continued involvement and to prevent organized outside groups from hijacking the vote by walking in, joining, and then voting only in their own self interest then leaving. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to make this clarification.

I would like for anyone who is interested in seeing the actual plan for Buckroe to please visit hampton.gov and take a look at the actual plan itself before making up your mind. This plan will NOT remove the green space from First St forward except to add an additional 150 parking spaces on the street and in the expanded parking areas. There will be a mix of single family homes in the other green space areas along with several small neighborhood parks added. However, this is ALL just a conceptual plan, this is NOT set in stone. Any and all of this plan is up for discussion and compromise in the weeks and months ahead. I urge you to take a look at the actual proposal before signing this petition. I have lived 2 blocks from this green space for 13 years, I would not be supporting this plan if I thought it was going to do nothing but bring high end condos and remove all our open areas. Also, the Buckroe Civic Association vote taken was misrepresented here. At every community meeting that has taken place since last July, those attending were asked to join the BCA and be a part of what we do. We are an organized association with by-laws that we must follow. Be the change you'd like to see. Negativity and divisiveness are not the means to an end. Compromise and open communication is what can make Buckroe and Hampton all it can be. Amy Hobbs BCA president District 6 Neighborhood Commissioner

I have lived in the Newport News/Hampton area since 1994, and have visited Buckroe Beach many times to enjoy the beach, walk on the boardwalk and most recently, to take my son to the playground. While I am in agreement to the Buckroe area gaining some appeal that is has lost over the years, I don't think it's necessary to build a huge lot of condo's right by the beach. I think it would look a little odd to see this building right in the middle of a community, and secondly right on a small yet beautiful beach. The question is - is it necessary? We have plenty of condominium properties throughout this area, there is no need for more. There are many houses in Buckroe that could be improved heighten value of the area, without taking away a great recreational area that is used by many.

Dear Hampton Council Members, My name is Richard McCarty and I reside at 401 Tappan Ave. I have live at this address for 22 years. Prior to this, I lived in a small cottage on Seaboard Ave. (behind the Buckroe Fire Dept.) for an additional 6 years. I am telling you this to give you an idea of my background knowledge of this area my family and I love dearly. I remember taking my children down to the Amusement Park on warm summer evenings and eating evening dinner at the Blue Marlin Resturant. I particularly enjoyed watching the hotrods cruise up and down the street in front of the boardwalk on hot summer nights. I remember being able to hoist my children up onto my shoulders and wad across the Saltpond inlet and walk over to the Grandview pier to buy them a soda . The Buckroe Beach of then and the Buckroe Beach now are in stark contrast to one another. One good...one bad... And now again the developers and other money mongers...and in all probability some of our city council members, want to gobble up the last few square feet of open space while lining their greedy little pockets, or filling the treasurey coffers with ill-gotten gains while telling themselves it's what's best for the community...our community. Francis Motley, in her famous question to then City Manager, Robert O'Neil understood what the stakes were when he (and Mayor Easton) coward and cringed at her question: " Mr. O'Neil....did you or did you not enter into a private agreement with the developers of the Salt Ponds Developement/Armada Hoffler to deny access to the tax payers of this city from using the beach that was replentished with the Federal/State funded dredgings from the Salt Ponds channel?" I think we all know what Mr. O'Neal's response was....a whimpy and resounding "Yes". It is our duty to be constantly vigilant against "do-gooders" such as Mr. O'Neil and his ilk, and make no mistake...Mr. O'Neal wasn't alone in his actions. Not all of Hampton's citizens are bleating sheep that blissfully munch away on pitiful handouts doled out by unscrupulous public servants and developers that rift our local government. There are those of us that keep a wary eye focused on what's going on around us. My dear Councilmembers, I wish to go on record that I am vehemently opposed to any further developement in the form of Condominiums in the vicinity of the area the meets and bounds at Pembroke Ave., Mallory St., and Seaboard Ave.. This "GreenSpace" should be free and open to the public at large for their recreational activities...inperpetuity.

I had the pleasure of visiting the buckroe beach bayfront recently when visiting my children. The beach is a beautiful area with a vista that I am sure is enjoyed by may who visit or just walk, drive, or ride by. Without balance in our development pursuits the natural beauty of our enviornment will be lost. A sad testimony to the legacy left to our children.
