Plans for Buckroe

Hampton Planning Commission will consider approval of a new beachfront plan for Buckroe at a public meeting at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 8. Thanks to the "green space gals," Hampton City Council directed the planning department to come up with a new plan based on public participation and an outside, paid, professional planner. I attended the planning sessions and listened to an unimpressive presentation by the paid professional. Several compromise plans have been proposed to meet the demands of the Buckroe Civic Association and the green space gals.
Nevertheless, we cannot dwell on the Buckroe beachfront plan forever. Thanks to the Herculean efforts of a few ladies, the City Council has recognized that Buckroe Beach is not merely a local issue but a regional one, and the city of Hampton has changed its attitude away from total development of the Buckroe open space.
Not everyone will be happy at the public hearing before the City Council on Jan. 10, nor will they be overjoyed with the final vote on Jan. 24. However, let us support our Hampton council members in whatever their decision is and get on with making Hampton and Buckroe a better place to live.
