Psycho Sandra, I saw your last letter in the Daily Press and have to say that I have given you too much credit in the past. You have no idea how the consulting world or the rest of the world outside of buckroe works. You should stick to your simpleton ways you are used to and let the real decisions be made by people with a little higher mental capacity!

Ladies and Fellow Citizens, At the 11 January 2006 Council meeting I brought before Council the numbers of acres of public parks in Newport News versus the City of Hampton.

In Huntington Beach alone, Newport News has 60 acres to the 10 acres we set aside for Buckroe Beach.  I asked that the additional 8-10 acres from First Street to Second Street be set aside for a public park and parking for Buckroe Beach.

I have asked that Economic Development begin their Bayfront Initiative on Second Street instead of First Street. The City OWNS that acreage. We do NOT own the acreage at Fort Monroe nor do we have any knowledge at this time as to when and if we will!

As for the last four initiatives brought to Council on January 9th, that was the Planning Department (staff) and not the members of the appointed Planning Commission.  The Planning Commission last vote was to honor the freeze on any more initiatives at least until the first quarter of 2006.

We have a Public Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee and to the best of my knowledge, they have not reviewed this plan as a committee.  They have not given any input to the Planning Commission or the City Council. The statements of the Green Space Ladies have been on target, truthful and timely.

If any member of the community takes issue with their statements they need to face a mirror.  At least the Green Space Ladies have not used hatred and spite to make their attempts public.  For that alone, I thank you.  Good Luck in your endeavors.

Best regards,
Angela Leary, Member of Hampton City Council.

*Voting member of Council in favor of keeping the acreage between First and Second Streets for additional parking/park space.  I would also like to neighborhood friendly light commercial along Second Street.

On Friday, 10 Feb, Councilman R. Gilliland sent an e-mail to other Hampton city leaders and city staff with a suggestion which read in part:

"Currently the Buckroe Plan, inclusive of the Bayfront Initiative, is on hold (with the exception of 4 specifics listed in the resolution passed by council), pending more clarity regarding Ft. Monroe.

"We are confident that Ft. Monroe will ultimately be turned over to Hampton...exactly when and under what terms and details is still to be determined.  I believe we should use this lull in the process productively by resurrecting the planning process.

"I recommend that staff reconstitute the planning team, ensuring proper representation of various interests and broad notification. Once reconstituted the team should take up the Bayfront Initiative specifically, but do so in the context of the total Buckroe Plan and with Ft. Monroe in mind."

Mr. Gilliland then requested the City Manager to please assist by speaking with staff and facilitating discussion of resurrecting the planning process.

Mr. Gilliland provided me and others with an information copy of his e-mail and stated he hoped we passed it along to our constituencies. Additionally, he ended by saying his hope was that his e-mail would spark productive dialogue.

I applaude Mr. Gilliland's suggestion. It is a wonderful step forward for everyone, be you a supporter for keeping Lots B for the public or be you a supporter for selling Lots B to developers for private residents.

This is progress. A resurrection of the planning process for the Bay Front Initiative will involve fresh voices and opinions on the fate of those lots from throughout the city.

Please touch base with Mr. Gilliland and Council and City Staff and let them hear your feelings, your productive dialogue, about his suggestion to resurrect the planning process on the Bay Front Initiative (Lots B).

A link to Council is on the homepage of this website. Thank you.
